Not many people may know this about me, but I am a member of Team One. That is, I believe that decades and millennia begin in years that end with the number “1”. The Gregorian Calendar began with the year 1 AD, so the first decade would have been from 1 AD to 10 AD with the second decade staring in the year 11 AD. Come on folks, after all, we count from 1 to 10, not 0 to 9…
Twenty years ago, as we rolled into the year 2000, everybody was too busy partying like it was 1999 to pay any attention to such trivia. Well… it actually was 1999, and by that time we had been singing about it for 20 years or so (thanks Prince!) so, right or wrong, it was about time to bust a move!
I can’t lie, I was right there vigorously celebrating right alongside many of my brothers and sisters. On the morning of January 1, 2000 I may not have remembered much of the events of the night before, but at least I was clear on what millennia I was in! Also, as a member of Team One, I got to do it all over again a year later!
2010/2011 came and went and no one talked about the “decade” thing very much. I think it may have been partly due to the fact that nobody was quite sure what to call either one: the “oughts”, “zeroes”, the “twenty-teens”? Somebody help me here — I gave up a while back…
So, whether you consider yourself stepping into a new decade, or you’re stuck here with me in the second decade of the New Millennium for another 366 days, I wish you a peaceful and prosperous 2020. May all of your prayers be answered and all of your dreams come true! Happy New Year!
